If your computer doesn’t already have a sound card installed, use a flathead screwdriver to pry out the metal bay cover that corresponds with the slot you’re going to use. Unplug the CD/DVD audio lead from the card and lift the sound card up and out of the slot. Remove the screw that secures your current sound card to the frame with a Phillips screwdriver, if applicable. Shut down your computer, unplug its power cord, disconnect all peripheral devices and open its case. This is important to know before purchasing a sound card, because a card made for one will not fit into the other. Be careful to avoid allowing the beads of solder from coming into contact with each other.Ĭheck your computer’s documentation to determine whether its motherboard features PCI or PCI Express slots. Holding the solder in place, touch its end with the tip of the soldering iron until a small bead forms on the connection point. Touch one of the two connection points near the headphone jack with a piece of solder. If it’s not accessible, remove enough internal components – such as your computer’s hard drive and/or CD/DVD writer – to allow a clear path to it. Locate the inside end of the headphone input. Touch an unpainted metal object to discharge static electricity from your body. Slide the shell back and lift off the computer. Disengage the shell by removing thumb or Phillips screws from its back lip or by depressing tabs on the sides of the computer case. Most flat desktop models feature removable shells that comprise the top and sides of the case. Remove the screws, slide the panel back and pull it away from the main housing. If you’re working with a vertical tower, access to the inside of the computer is gained by removing the case’s side panel, which, in many models, is secured with thumb or Phillips screws through the panel’s back lip. Shut down your operating system, turn off your computer and disconnect the power and all peripheral cords.
